Politeness Equivalence in C-E Translation

汉英语言文化的差异性决定了汉英翻译中礼貌等值的相对性。篇章是言语行为序列,Brown和Levinson的面子论等礼貌语用观不仅适用于言语行为,同时适用于篇章行为。翻译中礼貌等值问题的研究重在吸收等值翻译理论的科学内涵,借鉴言语行为理论和礼貌语用研究的成果,探讨言语和篇章层面的礼貌等值。言语行为的言外之力在一定程度上是可译的,但等值总是相对的。因此,礼貌等值重在言外之力和语势的最佳等值。

Linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese predetermine the relativeness of politeness equivalence in C-E translation. Text acts are sequences of speech acts and thus the face-saving theory of Brown and Levinson and other pragmatic views of politeness shall apply not only to speech acts but also text acts. Studies on politeness equivalence in C-E translation can be conducted at two levels, namely speech acts and text acts, by drawing on the scientific findings of translation equivalence theory, speech act theory and the pragmatic views of politeness. The illocutionary force of an act is, to an extent, translatable, but equivalence is always relative. Therefore, emphasis on politeness equivalence is to be laid on the optimal equivalence of illocutionary force.
