214 testing spots were arranged in Shanhai suburbs and soil section samples of 1 m deep layer were collected according to natural generating layer. Cu, Zn, Mn, Co, As, Fe, Mo and the total rare-earth elements were studied and the soil background values of Shanghai and each county were provided (Zn 83.81, Cu 27. 79, Mn 555. 48, Co 12. 66, As 8. 71, Mo 0. 58, Fe 3. 02% and total rare-earth elements 228.6 mg/kg). The Cu content and Mn content were lowest in limnic deposition within 4 parent material developing soils. There was a median correlationship among content of Mn, organic material and PH value. The content of Zn reduced significantly with the increment of Ca content in soil while the contents of Zn, Co, As increased with the thinning of soil granules. The contents of Cu, Mn, Co and As were highest in tidal land while the content of Mn increased from continent to coast. The content of Zn reduced gradually from limnetic plain, coastal plain to tidal land and was the lowest in delta.
