The thesis starts with analyzing how the second-generation Chinese American women struggle between Chinese traditional culture their parents are trying to pass on to them and American culture which they grow up in. Consequently, on the one hand, they are eager to identify themselves with mainstream society, on the other hand, they find it difficult to break away from Chinese traditions. The thesis aims at interpreting the cultural conflicts between Mothers and Daughters and exploring the social and cultural reasons why the secondgeneration Chinese American women are marginalized by mainstream American men and patriarchal Chinese community. After experiencing sexual and racial discrimination from two dominant cultures, young daughters finally tolerate the bicultural status and succeed in constructing their unique identity.
