The outcomes of low birth weight (LBW) infants was broadly concerned as the survival rate of LBW infants increase. This article summarized the physical growth and neuropsychic developmental outcomes of LBW infants. The results showed that for: ①Physical growth: There is a “catch up growth” in LBW infants within the first year after birth or from 8 to 14 years, but the height, weight, head circumference and body mass index of LBW infants were less than those of normal birth weight (NBW) infants at adolescence. LBW adolescents had similar sexual maturity, as compared with NBW adolescents. ②Neuropsychic development: LBW children had higher rates of neurosensory impairments, coordinate maldevelopment, disability, subnormal and borderline IQ. Significantly, more children with LBW met criteria for learning disability.
