Objective To investigate the neuronal activity in the basal ganglia in patients with torsion dystonia. Methods Using the electrophysiological recording system and Poly-view Software, the neuronal activity was recorded from the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) in 4 patients and the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in 2 patients and assessed for the mean discharge rate and the pattern of spontaneous activity. Results The mean discharge rate of neurons in GPi was (26. 4±13. 9)Hz, and the pattern of spontaneous neuronal activity was highly irregular, occurring in intermittent grouped discharges separated by periods of pauses. STN neurons had an irregular discharge pattern and a mean discharge rate of (49. 1±9. 2) Hz. Conclusions It is suggested that the neuronal activity of GPi was reduced and the discharge was irregular, and STN neuronal activity was elevated in patients with torsion dystonia.
