The counterbalance effect of a pumping unit can be analyzed and adjusted trustworthily by means of the power curve method. If the pumping unit is unbalanced, the counterweight and the crank balance arm can be adjusted according to the formu- las presented in this article. By this method, the false balance appeared on the occasion of negative work by the conventional electric current method can be avoided.
