明清时期，湖广是淮盐销售的主要地区，武汉作为湖广中心城市和水运枢纽，成为盐船靠泊和盐斤分销的集中地。由此，对武汉经济产生了积极影响：商业资本的形成和发展、城市建设和消费资金的积累、地方公益事业的资助以及与盐相关行业的发展。
