地理信息系统(GIS)技术日趋完善,GIS的应用,尤其是在城市中的应用,己经越来越广,由于应用部门的工作重点不同,对地理信息的要求不同,因此所要建立的数字地图在内容、数据结构等方面也有所不同.目前制作的数字地图是为制图而作的,并不是按照GIS的要求制作,因而无法满足GIS对数字化地形图的要求.建立面向GIS的基础数字地图库势在必行.

GIS(geography information system)technology is becoming perfect day by day and its application spreads wider and wider. As the applying sectors have different work points, they differ in their demands on GIS. Therefore the digital map banks they are sitting up vary in contents and data structures. The existing digital maps are made for drawing. They are not made according to the requirements of GIS. Hence they fail to meet the requirements of GIS when making digital relief maps. So setting up GIS elementary digital map banks is essential.
