At present, Japan maintains its hostile and containing policies toward the DPRK. The foundation of Japan - DPRK relationship is quite fragile. In addition, U.S. policy toward DPRK has substantial impact on Japan, there will be a long and tortuous path for improving Japan - DPRK relations.
