The current developments in the base station antenna techniques for celluar mobile communication are reviewed. Antennas, being a vital and integral part of base stations for cellular communication, have received much attention over the years. The base station antennas are generally required to satisfy more critical system specifications, and some factors related to propagation, system, and environment conditions must be taken into account. Some important problems for the design of highperformance base station antennas are addressed from the viewpoint of the system design. Several newly developed base station antennas such as dualband antennas, dualbeam antennas, and polarization diversity antennas are also presented. Finally, applications of smart antenna techniques to the base station are introduced.
