The present paper compares short stories written by James Joyce and Lu Xun from three perspectives: theme, characterization, and the novelist's experience and approach to life. The study reveals that there is striking correspondence between Joyce's Dubliners and Lu Xun's short-story collections Call to Arms and Wandering, both in theme and in characterization. Joyce mocked the “moral paralysis' from which Dublin suffered while Lu Xun ridiculed the “moral inferiority' ingrained in Chinese people. Both Joyce and Lu Xun depicted a gallery of pathetic characters, all victims of a suffocating society. It is found that the element of realism has provided a possible focus of comparison between the two otherwise incompatible masters in world literary history.
