This paper presents an introduction to Optimality Theory (OT). OT is a rather innovative development of Generative Grammar. Its major concern is the ranking of constraints and the resolutions of conflicts between competing constraints. This paper discusses the origin and basic concepts of OT, the ranking of constraints, the strength of OT, and the wide application of OT.
