This paper presents the study of copper, zinc, iron, magnesium and calcium contents in both senile macular degeneration (SMD) and normal human serum. The amounts of these trace elements,20 samples in each group, were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS).After treated bystatistics, the results showed that zinc level was significantly higher (p<0.01) and iron level was muchhigher (p<0. 05)in the samples of SMD than those in the normal group. However, there was no differ-ence about copper, magnesium and calcium contents between two groups. We compared the resultswith those determined by other scientists, and reviewed the role of zinc and some other trace elementsin the metabolism of retina. We believe our study will provide evidences for further research in thisfield.
