As a representative postmodernist writer, Thomas Pynchon is featured by his fusion of natural science and humanities. In particular, he introduces the thermodynamic term ' entropy' into his literary works as a metaphor for dramatically fragmented culture and the chaotic postmodern society. An exploration of his masterpiece The Crying of Lot 49 demonstrates Pynchon's integration of ' entropy' into his works. The theoretical, social and literary backgrounds of the integration are also analyzed.
