This paper introduces the feasibility and validity of the FSN filter type smokemeter used as a useful tool in the low diesel engine particulate emission control. The factors, which influence the measuring accuracy of FSN meter, are analyzed. Based on the relationship between FSN, opacity obscuration (N) and particulate concentration, the application of the smokemeter to the research on the diesel engine particulate emission control is introduced.
