First used by David Hayman,the term'Arranger'in Ulysses refers to the role of the shaping function between the implied author and the narrator.The Joycean scholar Hugh Kenner penetratingly applied this term to analyzing the narrative structure of Ulysses.On the basis of a close reading of Ulysses and the relative observations by Hugh Kenner,this essay reexamines the role performed by the arranger in the narrative texture of Ulysses and concludes that just like a camera lens beyond the time-space boundary,the arranger,as the role dramatized by the narrator itself into the fictional world of Ulysses,is performing the scenes of Dublin life together with the characters,observing the actions of the characters,and arranging the encounter of the protagonists.
