Based on the music work The Yellow River, there are six dance works-the classical Chinese dance The Yellow River, the folk dance The East is Red, the ballet The Yellow River, the modern dance We See the River Bank, the recent special evening dance performance 'Defend the Yellow River,' and the ballroom dance The Yellow River-which cover six important types of dance. It is seen through the above artistic phenomenon that The Yellow River Cantata and the piano concerto The Yellow River have deep rooted in our culture. Though different are the six dance works, they happen to coincide one another in reflecting the same national spirit.Ⅰ. Chinese classical dance The Yellow River:choreographing the Yellow River on history The Chinese classical dance The Yellow River premiered in 1988 and then won the classical work award in the'Competition of Chinese Dance Classics in the 20 th Century. ' The classical dance The Yellow River, composed of four movements, represents the magnificent scenes of the roaring waves of the Yellow River and the grand history of the persistence and tenacious struggle of the Yellow River’s children through the vocabulary of Chinese classical dance, such as the body postures of twisting, tilting, and leaning backward, the movement routines of ping yuan(flat circle), li yuan(vertical circle) and bazi yuan(figureeight circle), and the movements such as yunshou(wave hands like clouds), fenghuolun(literally means wind and fire wheels), chuanshou(take out hands), grand jump, and flipping.Ⅱ. Folk dance The East is Red: folk voices roaring in the Yellow River The folk dance The Yellow River is also known as The East is Red. It is choreographed on the basis of the fourth movement of the music The Yellow River, implying constant struggle and continuous flowing of the national spirit and integrity. The East is Red breaks out of the restriction of ethnic regions and attributes, combines the movement vocabulary of Han folk dance with its ideology, processing and interpreting them in a symbolized way, and finally expresses the national culture and spirit.Ⅲ. Ballet The Yellow River. the Western narrative expression of the Yellow River The ballet The Yellow River is another ' nationalized ' work from the National Ballet of China. It not only exhibits the Chinese people’s self-confidence and self-reliance as well as the spirit of the Chinese nation but also showcases the creative ballet language and national ballet style. This work once again proves that Western ballet can be closely integrated with China’s historical reality and political culture.IV. Modern dance We See the River Bank:interpreting self through the Yellow River The modern dance We See the River Bank, as one of the Yellow River themed series, is the ' Yellow River ' work to present the Chinese people’s life in the present tense. With the accompaniment of the piano concerto The Yellow River, the dance does not develop around the Yellow River. The dance is not used to contrast the grand theme of the Yellow River, but uses the Yellow River to interpret the dance itself.Ⅴ. Special dance performance ' Defend the Yellow River': using dance suite to construct a 'new Yellow River 'The special dance performance ' Defend the Yellow River 'is a new attempt to combine several relatively independent or complete small dance works in the form of dance suite. In the performance, we see the deconstruction and reconstruction of the Chinese classical dance The Yellow River, see the disparity and integration of different forms of dance, and see that Chinese classical dance and modern dance complement each other under a common theme, which transforms into the new significance of our era.VI. Ballroom dance The Yellow Rivern a ' foreign Yellow River' with an international style The ballroom dance The Yellow River, a 'foreign Yellow River' with an international style, is different from the abovementioned five versions of The Yellow River. It chooses anti-Japanese national salvation as its creative theme. At the same time, the ballroom dance The Yellow River has also broadened the idea of creating a ballroom dance. It is the first revolutionary themed ballroom dance with Chinese characteristics, integrating hand and dance gestures with revolutionary symbols. All the six versions of dance works themed with the Yellow River use the piano concerto The Yellow River as the music accompaniment. Yet they use different dance vocabularies and different dances in the four movements to illustrate the same spirit of the Yellow River. The creation of the Yellow River themed dance series not only inherits the essence and connotation of the Yellow River spirit, but also closely follows the footsteps of the times to realize the continuation and surpassing of the signification of the Yellow River.
