Flow is the psychological concept raised by the American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It refers to an optimal psychological experience with a high level of concentration. His theory is that people are the happiest when they are in a state of flow. 'Chinese classical dance' has a motto saying that training should 'start with the mind, concentrate the strength at the waist, direct the strength through the body to every tip.' In other words, actions are controlled by the mind, guided by consciousness, driven by breath, and then realized through limbs. This is a perfectly unified state of mind and body, a highly orderly merger of action and awareness which is a component of flow. Therefore, in training 'Chinese classical dancers,' it is necessary to train the mind, increase absorption and concentration and attain order before the level of fulfillment and happiness is reached. Meanwhile, the 'power of the mind,' which is highly stressed in Chinese classical dance, must be produced through a high level of engagement and immersion. That means students must be motivated to enter the state of flow where physical-mental unity and action-awareness unity can be realized. Therefore, the theory of flow has great relevance to basic training for Chinese classical dancers.
