In Northeast China,“Sala Chicken”(or“sa la ji”)has a history of more than 200 years as a practical tool, especially popular in the rural areas of the middle and late Qing Dynasty. At first,it was a stick beggars usually held in hand, commonly known as the“beat dog stick,”partly for self-defense.Later,beggars used thicker bamboo sticks.A red rope with copper coins or brass bells was tied around the hollow part, making the stick a musical instrument that gave out pleasing sounds when it was shaken. At the bottom of the stick, bamboo clappers were attached, and made rythmic sounds. When people heard the sound, they would know that beggars were coming,so they would get small change ready for them.“Sala Chicken”has gradually evolved into a performing prop with strong performativity during the use of beggars and folk artists. It gained more performance function than utilitarian function and drove the innovation of folk art.
