译者归来与诗魂远游——蔡廷干汉诗英译之《唐诗英韵》研究

The Return of the Translator and the Far Travelling of Poetic Souls: A Study of Ts’ ai T’ingkan’s Translation of Chinese Poems in English Rhyme

《唐诗英韵》是晚清官员兼学者蔡廷干英译中国古诗的代表作,也是近代中国英译汉诗的开山之作。本文从译介动机、译介策略、译文接受三个方面探讨这一译作以及蔡氏的翻译实践。研究发现,蔡氏译诗具有明显的文化和政治动机,而为了实现其动机,在翻译过程中采用了有利于目标读者接受的归化策略和明晰化策略,体现了强烈的读者意识。在中国文化走出去这一当下语境下探讨蔡氏译诗,对译者素养、翻译模式、读者意识和翻译策略等方面都具有重要的启示意义。

Chinese Poems in English Rhyme is a representative work of Ts’ai T’ing-kan,a lateQing official-scholar,and also the first translated work of Chinese ancient poems in modern China.This thesis conducts a preliminary study of this work and Ts’ai’s poetic translation in terms of translation motives,translation strategies,and translation reception.The study shows that Ts’ai was so culturally and politically motivated that he adopted domestication and explicitation which facilitated readers’reception,and his strategies demonstrated his reader awareness.It is of special significance to discuss Ts’ai’s poetic translation in a context of Chinese culture going global,as revealed in the following aspects:translators’qualifications,translation mode,reader awareness,translation strategies,etc.
