论《庄子》的哲学翻译——以《齐物论》为例

On the philosophical translation of Zhuangzi——The case of “On Leveling All Things”

《庄子》不仅是一部文学著作,更是一部哲学典籍。仅从文学、文化的视角翻译《庄子》难以完整体现其思想价值,应进一步探索以哲学翻译的方式呈现《庄子》,向英语世界展现其哲学精义。哲学典籍的英译具有其特殊性,译本应注重对哲学家思想和体系的精确阐述,因此以中国哲学研究的基本范式指导翻译更为可取,即通过对存在争议字词的训诂考据来审慎确定词义,并全面综合历史上各个版本的注疏来解释其哲学含义。此外,亦可运用正文中插入解释性文字并与脚注、尾注相结合的标注方式,帮助读者通过译本理解《庄子》的哲学思想。

As a literary and philosophical classic,Zhuangzi is of crucial importance and influence in Chinese history. However,though the text of Zhuangzi contains extensive philosophical content,a literary approach to its translation would fall short of faithfully reproducing the true thoughts and value of Zhuangzi’s philosophy. Adopting a philosophical approach to the translation of Zhuangzi is not only surfacing the issue hitherto neglected,but also justifying the status and influence of Zhuangzi in the history of philosophy. Methodologically,this paper proposes several approaches in philosophical translation based on the research paradigm of Chinese philosophy,namely making clarifications of words by annotation research and textual research,interpreting meanings with comprehensive comparisons among previous notes and commentaries,combining inserted explanations with footnote and endnote in translated text,etc.
