A Detailed Discussion on the Xiyin Pattern on Painted Pottery

近年来,笔者在系统整理庙底沟文化彩陶资料过程中,发现在受关注的纹饰里,有一类是应当包括而没有包括在内的,它长期以来被研究者忽略了。这是在黄河中游地区流行较广的一种纹饰,是一种二方连续式的弯角状纹饰,是庙底沟文化彩陶中最常见的纹饰之一。庙底沟文化彩陶中的弯角状纹,是一种典型的地纹彩陶。一般是周围以黑彩作衬地,空出中间的弯角。也许仅仅是因为它的构图过于简练朴素。

The horn-shaped pattern,also named as xiyin西阴pattern by Professor Li Ji李济,was first decorated on the painted pottery of late Banpo半坡culture,and prevailed in the period of Miaodigou庙底沟culture.After a detailed study on its origin,distribution and category,this paper concludes that the xiyin pattern was a kind of continuous pattern combining of two units and that it was widely adopted by the Neolithic cultures in south Shanxi山西,west Henan河南,northwest Hubei湖北,central Shaanxi陕西as well as east Cansu甘肃.This study also demonstrates that the xiyin pattern became a kind of formula design in Miaodigou period and it denies the pattern reflects the motif of birds.
