Use and Misuse of "Shall" in C-E Translation of Business Contracts

英文的经贸契约条款中通常使用助动词shall来表示必须履行的责任义务和不得发生的行为 ,本文通过笔者在翻译实践与翻译教学中遇到的若干实例介绍shall的这一特殊用法以及典型的滥用现象。

The word “shall” is normally used in English business contracts to express obligations or duties that parties to the contract must perform or prohibitions that the parties must abide by.This paper illustrates this special use and some misuses of “shall” in Chinese-English translation of business contracts through a selection of examples accumulated from the writer's translation practice and translation teaching.
