In A Gathering of Old Men,Ernest J. Gaines deconstructs the stereotyped images of African-American men as timid, impotent victims of racism, subverts the projection of the group as the other by empowering them with a voice, and reveals,in the exploration of history, the significance of individual memories in reconstructing their dual cultural identity.
