辛西娅·欧芝克在《大披肩》中塑造了一位"另类"母亲。为母亲身份正名是特殊历史语境中不得已的行为,表明特定时期母性遭到的打击与损毁,揭示了女性身体受到男性戕害后的主体自主行为。罗莎的母性在纳粹面前的扭曲恰恰是大屠杀灭绝人性的证据,战后罗莎以想象的方式继续自我认可的母亲身份,以图解除在集中营失去女儿的事实,成为主体的生存手段。欧芝克书写的母亲身份是女性自我救赎的方式,尤其强调母亲承担讲述犹太人历史的责任,建构了犹太母亲传承的伦理,犹太母亲被擢升为民族历史记忆的传播者。
Cynthia Ozick has characterized the 'other'mother in The Shawl. The rectification of motherhood is an act of desperation in the Holocaust context,which indicates the attack and damage of motherhood and discloses woman's subjective act in confrontation with body's ruin by man. The distortion of Rosa's motherhood offers some proof of the Nazi's inhumanity of the Holocaust. After war,Rosa continues her self-recognized mother's identity in imagination for denying her daughter's death,which becomes a way of existence. Ozick's writing of motherhood is a way of woman's selfrescue,emphasizing mother's responsibility of telling Jew's history and constructing mother's ethics of inheritance. Thus,Jewish mother is promoted as a transmitter of ethnic memories.
