Fitzgerald offers a complicated writing of father ethics in his novel Tender Is the Night. By arranging in narration the absence and presence of two older-generation fathers, the novel indicates the death of traditional father ethics and the challenges that confront ethical taboos. As the representative of the younger-generation father,Dick Diver is directly involved in the change. He experiences the conflict of Sphinx factor, and eventually forms incestual father-daughter relationships with Nicole and Rosemary, thus forming the major ethical complex on the ethical line of father ethics. The structure of the novel provides a three-dimentional and developing presentation of this ehtical relation through narrative space and interchanging perspectives. Faced with this ethical state, the author tries to express his ethical choice via the escape that comes eventually to the characters; the escaping itself constitutes a return to the traditional ethical values.
