In the first decades of the 20 thcentury, modern Chinese accepted the influence of the outside factors,of which translation is one. For a long time, the studies concerning the evolution of Chinese resulting from indirect language contact seldom touch upon the contact-induced diachronic change in the shaping of discourse. However, the study shows the change in this respect is more obvious and typical than those in other aspects, and that modern Chinese exhibits greater reliance on contrastive markers to frame discourse. This paper, based on diachronic comparable corpora, looks into the use of sentence-initial contrastive markers and the role that translation plays in the development of modern Chinese, and it finds that by selective copying, the use of DM in translational language is copied into Chinese and adds to its variation in discourse organization.
