Nineteen Ancient Poems and the Attitude to Emotional Expression Held by the Literati in Ancient China

《古诗十九首》是中国古代抒情诗史上第一次对孔子“温柔敦厚”诗教传统的完整实践。《十九首》用情既不言政治教化 ,又不歌功颂德 ,而是言一己之情 ,表现出与前代截然不同的用情态度。其“含蓄蕴藉”、“怨而不怒”的抒情方式也直接影响了后世中下层文人的生活态度和行为模式。

Nineteen Ancient Poems is the first complete practice in the history of ancient Chinese lyrics of Confucius' instruction on poetic approaches to emotional expression, i.e. “being tender and gentle.” Nineteen Ancient Poems was not intended to give political instructions or to praise merits and virtues, but to express personal emotions, showing an attitude to emotional expression quite different from the previous generations of poets. The “reserved and restrained”,“discontented but unannoyed” approach to emotional expression had direct influence on the life attitude and behaviour pattern of the subsequent generations of literati of middle and lower class.
