Relationship between Text Functions and Domestication and Foreignization

This paper aims to carry out a tentative exploration of the proper adoption of domestication and foreignization in texts with different functions. After making an analysis of the respective advantages and limitations of domestication and foreignization, this paper combines text functions with the adoption of domestication and foreignization and probes into the issue of how to properly adopt the two translation strategies in texts with different functions, with Newmark’s theory of text functions and translation methods as guidance. Different text functions require different emphasis on the adoption of domestication and foreignization, therefore the translator should first make an analysis of the functions of the texts, and then decide the proper adoption of the two translation strategies accordingly.
