The story of Mulan is a classic text on the 'gender performativity' motif. The adaptations of the story by later scholars, influenced by androcentric value orientation, put the emphasis on Mulan’s keeping her virginity and virtues, and, set in the modern national imagination, functioned as a though carrier. 'Virginity' was especially valued by the adaptors, while 'foot-binding,' as the most representative of female body imprints in the narration, highlighted the inequality between male and female in the social gender culture. The adaptations of the story, following the 'female to male to female' progress, reflected traditional cultural accumulation and mental set.
