Book Engraving and selling at Tiangai Mansion of Lu's Family

吕留良创立的天盖楼是吕氏几代人刻书、售书的书铺。吕留良所编刻图书主要集中在时文类及理学类图书两个方面,这是天盖楼在图书市场上的主打产品。在通过最初的寄售打开市场之后,天盖楼改由自己开店销售,最后扩张到开分店,将天盖楼的图书销往全国。而编纂《四库全书》过程中各地督抚奏缴禁毁书籍清单,提供了估量天盖楼图书销售情况的另一途径。

Lu Liuliang built up Tiangai Mansion, which was used as a bookstore by the later generations of family Lu for engraving and selling books. The books engraved by Lu Liuliang can be classified roughly into two categories:current essays and essays on Neo-Confucianism,which are the dominant part of Tiangai Mansion's books. Tiangai Mansion began to sell books after opening up the market by consignment sales. Later on,chain bookstores were set up,selling the books to every corner of the country. The list of banned books made by the provincial officials while compiling Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature provides the book sales of Tiangai Mansion from another angle.
