Choices for Survival: Ethnic Awareness of North American Indians and North American Indian Literature

本文以时间为序,解读历史浪潮中的印第安民族及其生存环境,解析印第安人的民族意识与北美印第安文学。印第安人经历了前殖民地时期的和谐相处和多样文学萌芽、种族接触时期的文化同化、印第安文艺复兴时期的发声和回归传统、二十世纪末的融合愿望及二十一世纪的成功种族融合与印第安人的自强不息。

Chronologically, this paper interprets the ethnic awareness of North American Indians in different historical periods and their living environments as is represented in North American Indian literature: the blissful existence and diversity of literature in pre-colonial period, the assimilation in the contact period, the voicing and return to tradition in the American Indian renaissance, the wish to integrate into the mainstream society at the end of the 20 th century, and the successful merging and survivance of the American Indians in the 21 st century.
