A Pioneer in Introducing Western Knowledge: On Translated Geographic Terms in Haiguotuzhi

《海国图志》是中国近代史上第一部系统介绍世界地理的著作,其地理术语译名具有重要的研究价值。在中西学术差异极大的语境下,《海图图志》注重地理术语译名的专业性、系统性和能产性,体现了一定的术语意识,对中国地理学的近代转型做出了重要贡献。尽管其译名在标准化等方面存在诸多缺点,在思想观念上也没有走出华夏中心主义的格局,但其学术创新精神仍然值得当今译者学习。

Being regarded as the first book which systematically introduced the world geography into China,Haiguotuzhi still has significant research values in terms of its translation of geographic terms.Despite of academic differences between China and the West,it manifests terminological consciousness in the professionalism,productivity and systematic construction of translated geographic terms,hence made great contributions to China’s modern transformation in geography.Although its terms are featured with non-standardization and Sino-centric ideology,it is worthy of being followed in terms of its pioneering academic spirit.
