According to the Noticing Hypothesis(Schmidt,1990,2001),noticing is the necessary and sufficient condition for converting input to intake and therefore is crucial to second language learning. To promote L2 learners’ noticing of the target structures in the input, several pedagogical methods have been adopted, including input enhancement, output practice and corrective feedback. This paper first outlines the main tenets of the Noticing Hypothesis and the influences on noticing. It then presents a critical review of the empirical studies centering on the promotion of noticing in L2 learning. Finally, the implications of promoting noticing in second language teaching and future research directions are touched upon.
