"中和"说作为中国古典审美范畴,其内涵、应用和影响都是全方位的。它既是作品论,又是创作论,也是鉴赏论。中,即中庸;和,即和谐。"中和"说贯穿于中国古代美学的始终。它既是艺术心理学,又是艺术辩证法,以其主张中和之美,从而构成了不同于西方美学的特色。"中和"是中华民族艺术审美心理和艺术表现精神的集中体现。
As a central Chinese aesthetical concept, the Golden Mean and Harmony exerts an all around influence, with its implications and applications. It is at once, a theory of appreciation and creation of arts. The Golden mean, or "zhong" in Chinese, means a middle state of everything; Harmony, or "he" in Chinese, means existing peacefully together. Golden Mean and Harmony weaves through the whole course of Chinese aesthetics. Embedding both a theory of artistic psychology and a theory of artistic dialectics, it sticks firmly to the concept of "zhong" and "he", thus forming properties rather different from western aesthetics. Golden means and harmony is the ultimate representation of Chinese artistic psychology and artistic manifestation.
