Great Britains policies toward its thirteen North American colonies were merca n tilist, affecting their economic development both positively and negatively. As these policies were formulated to favor only the colonizing country, their negat ive effects on economic operations in the different colonized regions became inc reasingly obvious and dominating. Throwing off the development model with which mercantilist policies saddled them was to be a driving force in the colonies s truggle for independence.
