James Joyce uses many symbols in his works to highlight the theme. Meanwhile, he also uses epiphany to depict the inner world of his characters. Such a technique is employed not only by the realist writers but also the modernists. This paper, based on comments on the relationship between modernism and realism, concludes that Dubliners has its peculiar revealing form of pre-modernistic literature. In this regard, James Joyce is worthy of greater attention.
