On the Modernity Contradiction of May Fourth New Cultural Movement

现代性含义的多值性,内含着对现代性理解上某种先在的片面性倾向。五四新文化运动是中国现代史上的文化现代性选择"方案"。在这一现代性"方案"中,也先天地存在着"整体性反传统"的内在缺陷,"五四"学者对传统的激烈偏执性否定和后来的某种程度的反思、调整,表明了五四新文化运动的某种现代性悖论。

The multiple meaning of modernity is likely to cause the one-sided tendency on the understanding of modernity. The May Fourth New Cultural Movement is a cultural modernity scheme in the Chinese modern history, however, the scheme also has its inner defection because of its totally anti-tradition attitude. The violent opposition against tradition held by the scholars of May Fourth and its latter's adjustment shows a certain modernity contradiction of the New Cultural Movement.
