作为“关于数据的数据”的元数据 ,是数字信息组织和处理的基本工具。它们为各种形态的数字化信息单元和资源集合提供了规范、普遍的描述方法 ,元数据的开放描述和互操作已成为一个基本要求。因此人们普遍要求元数据的定义、描述、管理和维护都遵循一定的开放规范机制 ,从而支持元数据的交换、复用、转换和整合。目前是传统图书馆逐步向数字图书馆发展的转型期 ,期刊信息资源的组织和描述工作成为数字图书馆信息资源建设的重要工作之一。主要探讨了在开放语言XML描述下针对生物医学期刊文献特点的元数据复用问题 ,包括元数据复用及复用的形式、原则及利用XML技术体系的元数据复用机制及实例。

Metadata, which are called 'data about data', are an essential tool of organizing and handling digital information. They offer criterial and universal description methods for various forms of digital information elements and collections. Their open description and interoperation can meet the essential demand of information handling. In order to sustain the exchange, reuse, transformation and integration of metadata, their definition, description, management and maintenance are required to be in accordance with open and standard mechanism. In the transition from traditional libraries to digital ones, the organization and description of information resources in journals are one of the main works in digital information resource development. The reuse of metadata with biomedical journal literature characteristics in open XML description is chiefly explored.It includes their reuse formats and principles, mechanisms in XML description as well as some examples.
