Mary Sidney, the sister of Philip Sidney, was praised as Muse or Sapple by her contemporary poets. William Brown hailed her as 'the subject of all verse' and Edmund Spencer called her 'the ornament of women'. She was the first English lady to publish her dramas. The Sidney Psalms, the great works by her and her brother, was highly praised by John Donne as 'The highest matter in the noblest form'. Concerning her, the outstanding lady in the English Renaissance, many gossips spread such as the relation of her to her brother; the relation of her to Shakespeare, etc.
