Critique of Crispin Sartwell’s Sufficient Thesis of Knowledge

Crispin Sartwell认为"真"是知识的本质,所以知识仅仅是真信念;知识探究的目标是真信念/知识,确证仅仅是获得知识的工具,它不会给知识增加新的要素,所以确证不是知识的一个逻辑必要条件。其实,Crispin Sartwell的充分理论是片面的,因为它没有看到知识的公共性。知识是公共化了的真信念,而公共化了的无非就是确证了的,所以,确证应该是知识的逻辑必要条件之一。知识是确证了的真信念还是可以成立的。

Crispin Sartwell ingeniously holds that knowledge is merely true belief whose essence is truth; the goal of inquiry is true belief/knowledge, justification which is only a means to get to knowledge won’t bring new factors for knowledge and cannot be a logically necessary condition of it. However, Crispin Sartwell’s such theory is one-sided in that it neglects the publicity of knowledge. After all, knowledge is publicized true belief, which is in fact justified true belief. Therefore, justification should be a logically necessary condition of knowledge. It still makes sense that knowledge is justified true belief.
