The Outlook for American Energy Exports to Asia

This surprise turn-around in oil and gas production,combined with the recent decline in US oil demand,has led to a sharp decline in US dependence on imported energy.Net imports accounted for30 percent of domestic energy consumption in 2006.By the end of 2012 that share had fallen to 14 percent.Most government and industry forecasters expect this decline to continue,and US companies are already looking to export domestically produced energy abroad.In this paper I provide an overview of America’s rapidly evolving energy trade position,the policy barriers to expanded energy exports,and the possible implications for Asian energy markets.
