Making the New with the Old: Notes on the Renovation of Phoenix Plaza, Hu'nan Road, Nanjing

This article introduces the conception process and design features in the renovation of Phoenix Plaza on the Hu’nan Road in Nanjing.The architects fully respected the status quo and analyzed the current problems according to local conditions.On the basis of not making excessive reconstruction of existing buildings,they tried to artificially repair and implant something new into them to connect the old interface.At the same time,they revitalized the business atmosphere,so that they could be shown as brand new buildings.With this as an opportunity,they discussed the rules on how to break the shackles of function and space under the cost control of commercial plaza,and as a result,to achieve the aesthetic breakthrough.
