One area of discussion on the topic of'Old&New'within the built environment is Adaptive Reuse,an area in the design field that deals with repurposing old buildings and sites for something more contemporary, useful or meaningful that otherwise would be demolished. In general, progress is a good thing, but in the name of progress almost every day important historical sites and architecture are demolished or inappropriately altered. This paper focuses on the theory, methods and cases of Adaptive Reuse,a specific sub-field in architecture design and planning that involves repurposing, adaptation and reuse of old or existing structures. When dealing with old, historic structures,Adaptive Reuse is placed in-between historic preservation and demolition. To do a sensible job in this area,a designer,an architect and a planner must understand the issues and concerns in preservation, because the new design components need to respect and respond to the historic context, whether it is architecture or urban fabric.
