In his novel The Dharma Bums,Jack Kerouac boldly tries his hand in the writing of zen. Character images created in the novel function as the signs that pave the way for the presentation and delivery of zen in the American native cultural context. Surveyed from the perspective of Yuri M. Lotman’s theory of semiosphere,Kerouac’s writing strategies illustrate his creativity for operating the transmission of alien cultural messages in the novel. And behind the author’s individual writing strategy,it is the feasibility of dialogue between cultural texts of zen and those of American native culture that guarantees the effectiveness of alien cultural transmission and reception.
