A Critical Revisit of the Theoretical Relationship Between John Fiske and Birmingham School

关于菲斯克与伯明翰学派的理论关系问题,学界一直存有两种截然对立的观点。如果采取历史与逻辑相统一的方法来看待这个问题,就可摆脱此种'一刀切'的二元思维,从而找到更为准确的判定方式。即菲斯克在理论初期曾短暂地归属于伯明翰学派,而在理论后期逐渐走向背离伯明翰学派根本精神的民粹主义泥淖,与学派分道扬镳。造成这一理论质变的原因与菲斯克个人旨趣的局限性、时代的复杂性以及文化研究本身的文化决定论倾向密切相关。

With regard to the theoretical relationship between John Fiske and Birmingham School,there have always been two extreme contradictions in academia.If we take a historical and logical approach to this problem,we can get rid of this dualistic thinking that'one size fits all'and find a more accurate way of judgment.That is,Fiske briefly belonged to Birmingham School in the early stage of the theory,but gradually developed into a theoretical populist limitation that deviated from the fundamental spirit of the School in the later stage of the theory,and parted ways with the School.The reason for this qualitative change is related to the limitations of Fiske’s personal interests,the complexity of the times,and the cultural determinism of Cultural Studies itself.
