The advancement of high power solid state lasers based on planar waveguide laser pumping is introduced in detail. The advantages and the potential risks are analysed. Proximity LD coupling, doubly-clad waveguide configuration, the use of nonstable cavity, the trapezoidal structure waveguide, and passive integrated Q-switching design are discussed. The laser media includes Yb3+, Nd3+ and Tm3+ doped YAG materials. 10 W and more near diffraction-limited laser output can be obtained from lasers with compact waveguides of monolithic structure. 100 W laser output will be possible and even more functions can be integrated into a monolithic device in the future.
