隐秘的推手:濮兰德在苏报案中的双重身份

J.O.P. Bland's Dual Identity in the Supao Case

新中国成立以来的苏报案研究在人物研究方面一向注重中方人员,而忽略了对案件走向起决定性作用的列强方面人员。濮兰德是当时上海公租界工部局总办兼《泰晤士报》驻沪记者。本文在已有研究基础上,通过已出版史料、莫理循未刊日记及《泰》报当时的报道,揭示濮如何以总办身份"侵权最辣"及如何以"上海煽动案"系列报道领导苏报案舆论潮的史实。濮的双重身份使其在苏报案中成为一个表面隐秘实则重要的角色,这既是清末半殖民地半封建社会的特殊产物,也是清末驻华记者亲历与构建清末历史事件的一个缩影。

As the chief executive of the Shanghai International Settlement’s municipal council and the Shanghai correspondent of the Times ,J.O.P Bland played a secret but significant role in the 1903 Supao case in Shanghai,representing the municipal council to assert the foreign community’s refusal of the Qing government’ s request to surrender the Supao detainers on the one hand and taking a leading position in the news representa-tions of the event with the “Shanghai Sedition Case”series on the other hand.Based on the historical records and reports,this paper aims to explore and reveal Bland’s dual identity and his influence in this historic event, which has been somewhat neglected by the Supao case researchers.Bland’s involvement in the case is also seen as an instance to show how foreign correspondents experienced and constructed the late Qing political and social events.
