Ode on the Pleasure Arising from Vicissitude by Thomas Gray is a great poem unfinished and it is published posthumously.It is selected in the famous anthology The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in English Language as for its polished language,lively image and profound artistic conception.This thesis attempts to make an analysis of the poem with artistic conception theory.In this analysis,the world of scene,the world of emotion,the world of principles and the undermeaning beyond literal meaning in the poem are explored.Meanwhile,the relationship between the image and the poet’s emotion is probed explicitly.
