The Theoretical Functions in Translation Studies

从翻译学是否可以成为一门独立学科的讨论中暴露出我国翻译研究领域的一个普遍性问题,即缺乏对理论功能的认识,这一问题严重影响了翻译学的建立和发展。从理论的性质、构成与功能,着重阐述了翻译理论在这一学科建设中的六大功能:认识功能、解释功能、预测功能、方法论功能、批判功能和实践与检验功能。

From the discussion whether translation study is an independent discipline, one may find a common phenomenon, ie. the neglect of theoretical study and the ignorance of the functions of theory. The author believes this is a very important factor that hinders the establishment of translatology and development of translation study. This paper discusses the nature, formation and functions of theory in general, and the six major functions of translation theories in particular, ie. cognitive function, explanatory function, predictive function, methodological function, critical function and practical and testing function.
